Storm research. Scientists & equipment inside an aircraft used in the FASTEX (Fronts & Atlantic Storm Tracks Experiment) weather study. The scien- tists are using computers to process data from the aircraft's instruments as it is collected. This Electra L188L aircraft uses radars to monitor the patterns of wind & rain. Other instruments measure the temperature & humidity of the outside air. The aircraft can release disposable weather stations (dropsondes) & monitor their radio transmissions. The FASTEX study is designed to discover what factors turn a normal low-pressure weather system (cyclone) into a storm, and to use these in computer models to improve weather forecasting.
