Steeple of St Olafs Church framed by buildings near Vene Street Tallinn Estonia

Once the tallest building in the world at 125 meters St Olavs is still the tallest building in Old Tallinn acting as a beacon to mariners The original steeple attracted lightning and the church burned to the ground and rebuilt with a shorter steeple During the Soviet occupation the KGB used the steeple as a surveillance center Although the church is ostensibly named for Norwegian King Olaf II Haraldsson a bizarre legend has it named after a merchant who fell to the ground while attaching a cross to the steeple
