This is an x ray of a ureteric calculus using contrast medium to show the structures of the urinary tract A calculus is an abnormal concretion occurring mostly in the urinary and biliary tracts usually composed of mineral salts It is also called a stone In this case the stone is in the ureter the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder Stones in the ureter can cause obstruction and are very painful for the patient The procedure of using dye to show up the structures of the urinary tract is called intravenous urogram IVU or intravenous pyelogram IVP
