Knee biopsy. Surgeon examining a tissue sample (biopsy) that has been obtained from a patient's knee using an arthroscope (device at centre right, held by another surgeon). An arthroscope is a type of endoscope used to look inside joints. It can also be used with scissor attachments (handles in hand) to cut tissue samples. The tissue sample is retained by the endoscope, which is then opened to release the sample (on tissue). A microscope will be used to examine the tissue to help assess or diagnose the patient's condition. This patient has rheumatoid arthritis, a condition where the body's own immune system attacks the joints and causes damage and inflammation. Photographed in the UK.
