The construction of thesacred edifice progressedslowly, chiefly owing todifferences between the arch-bishops and the citizens,and the choir was not con-secrated till 1322. Theworks were at length com-pletely abandoned at thecommencement of the 16thcent. In 1795 the building was converted by the French into ahay magazine, its ruin being rendered more complete by the abstrac-tion of the lead from the roof. The late kings of Prussia, Frederick William IV. and his pre-decessor , rescued the sacred edifice from total destruction. The. t Caution. Travellers are recommended not to engage any of thenumerous valets-de place who hover about, in and near the cathedral, astheir services are unnecessary. The Nave with the stained-glass windowsis open the whole day ; the Choir, in the intervals of divine service. Thefollowing are the only authorized fees (1—5 pers.): 1. For opening the choir,choir-chapels, and Dombild, 15 Sgr. ; 2. For the attendant who conductsvisitors along the upper choir-gallery, round the exterior of the cathedral,and to the summit of the tower, 15 Sgr.; 3. For opening the treasury, theshrine containing the relics of the Magi, and the Dombild, l|2 Thlr. Cardsare procured from the Suisse, who is generally in or near the transept.
