Male—Sides rufous; belly white; upperparts,throat and breast black; wings and tail black,trimmed with white. Female—Upperparts, wings,throat and breast bright grayish brown; tailbrownish, its outer feathers tipped with white;sides rufous, belly white. Call-note, an unmistakable tow-hee. The longblack and white tail of this ground bird, and thedistinct tri-color—rufous, black and white—of theplumage readily identify the Towhee.
