Aerial photograph of Bay St Louis, Mississippi, USA, on 30 August 2005, a day after Hurricane Katrina made landfall here on 29 August 2005. Landfall is where the eye of a hurricane passes from the sea to the land. At this point, Katrina had winds of over 200 kilometres per hour. The hurricane winds caused the sea to rise up onto the land in a storm surge many metres high. These coastal buildings have been completely destroyed. Hurricane Katrina killed thousands and devastated large areas of the US Gulf coast.
