A painting by the English artist Paul Sandby (1731-1809) of Askeaton Abbey or Askeaton Friary, located on the east bank of the River Deel, County Limerick, Ireland. A former Franciscan monastery it was plundered and later abandoned during the Second Desmond Rebellion of 1579. Revived in 1627 it was again abandoned in 1648 when Cromwell’s forces neared. It was reestablished in 1658 and continued to house friars until 1714.
