The capitals of the columns are all richly carvedwith tufts of fruit and leaves, in endless variety, whilesome on the north side display human heads and birds in fantastic intertwinings. .Mm iii 11. The whole of the interior shows an endless diversity offorms. There is something grand and solemn in theheavy massiveness of the pillars, and in the dimnesswhich the low vault and the thick walls spread over theside aisles. As usual, this most curious and interesting buildingwas spoiled by the want of taste and knowledge whichseems to prevail here in all such matters. The columns andtheir capitals, the vaults and groining, had been paintedall sorts of colours, but, thanks to the present bishop, allthese blemishes are being gradually removed with lovingcare under his own inspection. The rector of the publicschool at Schassburg, Friedrich Miiller, with a thoroughknowledge of his subject, has given an account of this
