In 1839 Chicago had its first great fire with aloss of $75,—ten years later the greatest storm andflood in its history destroyed many buildings, vessels,wharfs, etc. Later in the year of 1849 the second big fireoccurred. In 1857 the third destructive fire occurred inwhich there was an estimated loss of over $250, Thefourth and greatest fire in Chicago was in 1871. The firelasted three days, covered 2000 acres of the heart of the. Old Water Tower (One of the Few Landmarks Remaining Unharmed After the Fire in 1871) business district. More than 2500 stores and factories wereconsumed and at least one-third of the entire populationleft homeless. The estimated loss was upwards of $200,-000, The worlds first structural iron and steel sky-scrapers were erected. The Worlds Fair occurred in Chi-cago in 1893. The wonders and beauty of this expositionsurpassed anything of its kind ever held in the world. Morethan 30,000,000 people visited the exposition. Jackson Parknow marks the site of the exposition and some of the oldbuildings are left standing. Chicago at the present time has an area of more than 200square miles.
