M. Morgan, the first supervisor. Out of the original townshipthe towns of Grant. Elim and Wayne have since been formed, leaving thetownship of Delight with seventy-eight scjuare miles. At the time of thesettlement here there was no other settlement between the Platte valley andVictoria creek. During the few years that followed newcomers arrived almostweekly until there was quite a community. In 1885 Mr. Graves induced John. The First Building in Callaway. The ques-tion as to who is entitled to the credit of founding the town of Callaway hasbeen often disputed, and will perhaps never be fully determined to the satis-faction of all, but from what we can learn, J. Woods Smith is fully entitledto whatever honor the distinction confers, as it was in his brain that thescheme originated which materialized in the laying out of the town a fewmonths later. As Mr. Smith tells it, Callaway was first conceived in thelobby of the Paxton hotel at Omaha, in the fall of 1885.
