Humulin insulin injection pen. Humulin-S is a short-acting, soluble type of human insulin. The pancreatic hormone insulin is crucial in the body's control of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Diabetes mellitus results from a deficiency in insulin synthesis or secretion. Insulin-dependent diabetics require repeated injections of insulin to maintain the balance of glucose in their blood. Most available insulins are porcine or human-derived. Human insulins are prepared either by modification of porcine material or biosynthetically, through recombinant DNA technology using the bacterium Escherichia coli.
