The rotor of the high pressureturbines is 96 in. and the low pressure 140 in. in diameter. Theblades range from 2l/± to 22 in. in length. The vessel contains25 Scotch boilers, of which 23 are double ended, with eight fur-naces, and two are single ended, giving a total of 192 steam pressure is 195 lbs. The total heating surfaces of allthe boilers is 158,350 sq. ft. and the total grate area is 4,048 The turbines are designed to give a total horse-power of68,000. The vessel measures 785 ft. over all and is 88 ft. broadat the widest point, the mean draught being 33 ft. 6 in. and thedisplacement 38,000 tons. During its trials this vessel made anaverage speed of knots on a 48 hour AUTOMATIC CYLINDER COCK. A sectional view of the Dolph automatic cylinder cock is shownin the accompanying illustration. When steam is being used thepressure on the upper surface of the winged valve F forces itdown on its seat. When steam is shut off the spiral spring K plied from the main reservoir through an operating valve in thecab. In addition to the advantages gained due to the automatic ac-tion, the awkward and ofttimes unsatisfactory cylinder cock rig-ging is done away with; there is considerably more clearancebetween the road bed and the bottom of the cock, thus reducingthe liability of its being torn away. These valves are being usedon several railroads with satisfactory results and are made bythe Dolph Valve Company with offices at Buffalo, N. Y., andErie.
