The statue of Queen Victoria in the grounds of the Istana Singapore.

The Istana was originally built as the Governor’s Residence when Singapore was a British colony. It was completed in 1869. It housed not only the Governor but also senior administrators. The building passed to the new Singaporean government in 1959 on self-governance. Since 1960 the grounds have been open to the public on public holidays throughout the year. The grounds extend to over 100 acres and contain a 9 hole golf course. The statue of Queen Victoria in this image was commissioned by Sir Cecil Smith and was completed in 1889 by the sculptor EE Geflowski. It is a popular venue for the public during the Istana’s open days.
