William I aka William the Conquerer or William the Bastard (1027-1087) was the first Norman King of England, reigning from 1066 until his death in 1087. He launched the Norman conquest of England in 1066 following a meeting with Edward the Confessor in 1051, claiming that Edward promised him the throne of England on his death. The rest of his life was marked by struggles to consolidate his hold over England and his continental lands.
