'Amérique' from L'Abbé Gaultier's geography. Americas. RENOUARD c1830 old map

'No. VIII. Amérique, pour servir aux leçons de geographie de L'Abbé Gaultier'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Jules Renouard. Provenance: Paris, chez Jules Renouard, Libraire, Rue de Tournon, No 6. Type: 19th century antique map with original hand colouring. This scarce map of North America and South America by Jules Renouard shows Mexican Territory extending as far north as Cape Mendocino, a somewhat conjectural US/Canadian border, and the areas then occupied by many of native American indian tribes. The size and shapes of some of the US states and territories appear anomalous. Alabama appears to include a separate enclave centred around Aigleville - possibly representing the short-lived Vine and Olive Colony in Marengo county, which was occupied by exiled-French Bonapartists.
