A Story of the War CHAPTER ONE. First Drive Toward Paris. America was busy getting the signatures of thegreat powers to a series of permanent peace treatiesin 1914. The nations were pledging their word tothe United States and to each other—Germany wasnot one of them—to help avert all wars forever byrefraining from hostilities for at least a year in an^^cause of quarrel. Mars, the dread god of war,seemed as far away as the planet of the same name. It was midsummer and the farmers were think-ing of nothing but harvesting their crops.
