Newborn blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), or brindled gnu. Most blue wildebeest young are born within a 3 week period near or at the peak of the rainy season. 1 calf is born after a gestation of 8 to months. The calf is able to stand after only 6 minutes and able to run and keep up with the herd after a matter of hours. At 8 months old the calf will leave its mother to join a peer group. Wildebeest inhabit the plains and woodlands of south-eastern Africa, grazing on fresh grass. They are social animals, living in herds numbering several thousands of individuals. Both sexes grow short curved horns. Photographed in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, Africa.
