Ether is to be preferred unless specially care should be taken to guard against anaesthesia accidents,and while no undue haste should be made, every unnecessary mo-ment the patient is under anaesthesia must be considered lost. Every-thing, no matter how trivial, that can possibly be done before theanaesthesia is begun, should be attended to, to lose no time dur-ing the operation. This is a point too often Gauze sheet. XIII. After-treatment.—As soon as the operation is over and thedressings applied, the patient should be quickly placed in bed, sur-rounded by hot-water bags or bottles, and every effort made to guardagainst shock. All food and drink is withheld until anaesthesia-nausea is over, when teaspoonful doses of hot water may be allowed,followed by barley water, toast water, broths, and chicken may be given, but never sweet milk at first. If the stom-ach retains food well these may be followed by semi-liquid and laterby full diet. As soon as the stomach is quiet, one grain of calomelis given every hour until six or eight doses are taken.
