Le Don Hilton or La Caumine à Marie Best overlooking St Ouen's Beach in Jersey
Le Don Hilton or La Caumine à Mary Best also known as the St Peter’s Guardhouse, the middle battery, the powder magazine and the White House. It was built in 1765 to replace a guardhouse and magazine destroyed by fire and it was originally attached to a redoubt (or battery). It is the oldest defence in St Ouen’s Bay and is painted white as a navigation marker. Mary Ann Best was the daughter of an English soldier and a local woman, Marguerite Carrel. Born in 1790, she presumably lived here at some time but why her name should be attached is unclear. Today it is owned by the National Trust for Jersey. Le Don Hilton is located in St. Ouen Bay, on a strip of land between La Grande Route des Mielles and the sea wall. The site can be reached via Bus route 12a departing from St. Helier. There is a car-park, opposite the building on the other side of the road.
