Coloured X-ray of the side view of a partial knee replacement fitted in May 2012. The Partial or Unicompartmental Knee Replacement was pioneered in Oxford. The implant, made of metal alloy, attaches to the bottom of the femur (thigh bone, upper frame) and to the top of the tibia (shin bone, lower frame). It forms a flexible joint that can hinge like the old joint, relieving joint pain and partial knee replacement is a type of minimally invasive surgery. It is used on suitable patients when arthritis is confined to a limited area of the knee and offers major advantages over a complete knee replacement. There is a smaller incision, healthy parts of the knee are retained, recovery is quicker and the joint offers greater mobility.
