Fields of barley near Tain, Ross and Cromarty, with tractor tracks disappearing to the horizon. Tain is the home of the Glenmorangie distillery. Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is an annual cereal grain which serves as a major animal feed crop. In Scotland much is used for malting and distilling. It is also used as a health food. Barley is a member of the grass family Poaceae. In 2005, barley ranked fourth in quantity produced and in area of cultivation (560,000 km²) of cereal crops in the world.
