Geikie, Powell and Walcott. Portrait of Scottish geologist Sir Archibald Geikie (1835-1924, left), US geologist Major John Wesley Powell (1834-1902, centre) and US geologist and palaeontologist Charles Doolittle Walcott (1850-1927, right). Powell is famous for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers that included the first passage of European Americans through the Grand Canyon. He was the second director of the Geological Survey between 1881 and 1894, during which time he proposed policies for development of the arid American West. Walcott is best-known for his discovery in 1909 of well-preserved fossils in the Burgess Shale of British Columbia, Canada.
