Filtered blood. Bags receiving blood produced by the filtration of donor blood. The donor blood has flowed downwards through filters (not seen) and into these bags. The components of blood vary in size and can be removed by filters of different sizes. Before filtration, this blood was whole blood, as none of its components had been removed. A common filtration stage for whole blood is the removal of leucocytes (white blood cells). This is done to reduce the infections or immune system responses in patients receiving the blood. Further processing produces blood products used to treat blood disorders or to replace blood lost through surgery or an accident.
