Commotio retinae. Close-up of the eye of a 15- year-old boy showing commotio retinae. The boy was hit in the eye by a tennis ball. Commotio retinae is a condition that develops when travelling shock waves traverse the eyeball, damaging the outer layers of the retina without tearing them. It is often the result of an ocular trauma, as seen here. There is no remedy but the condition usually clears in 2-3 weeks.
