The Chinese differentiate between two kinds of Maho-medans in Kansu, the Sala, the descendants of a Turkishtribe which came from the neighbourhood of Samarcandsome five or six hundred years ago and settled on the upperYellow River round Ho Chou and Hsiinhua, and theoriginal Mahomedan population of the province, which alsocame from Turkestan, but at a much earlier period. Theformer are really Chinese Turks, while the latter are probablyso mixed with early Chinese colonists who adopted Islamas to merit the title of Mahomedan Chinese
