Microwave oven with the casing removed. The front of the oven is at left. Seen here are the magnetron (with label, centre) the transformer (grey box below the magnetron) and the cooling fan (right). The transformer converts a 240-volt AC (alternating current) power supply into high-voltage DC (direct current) power, which the magnetron converts into microwave energy to heat food. The cooling fan extracts hot air and prevents the system from overheating.
