Enterococcus faecalis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria (previously known as Streptococcus faecalis). This gram-positive ellipsoidal bacterium tends to form short chains. The bacterium at centre is in the process of dividing through binary fission. E. faecalis exists as part of the normal flora of the human alimentary tract, but may cause infections in the urinary tract. It may also cause bacterial endocarditis following gynaecological or genito-urinary surgery: this is important because of its resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics. x38,000 at 35mm size, x76,000 at 6x7cm size.
