The Long-Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) satellite, photographed during its deployment from the space shuttle Challenger on April 7, 1984, during mission 41-C. The satellite was designed to be left in orbit for just under a year, to test the long-term effects of exposure to space conditions on various electronic systems. It contained over fifty passive scientific experiments.
