Oral thrush. Inner cheek of a 51 year old woman with oral candidiasis (thrush, white patches), an infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans. C. albicans is commonly found on the skin and the mucous membranes of the mouth, digestive and respiratory tracts and the vagina. It is normally harmless, but the use of antibiotics or a suppressed immune system can lead to infection. This woman has been taking immunosuppressant drugs for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Treatment is with anti-fungal drugs.
