Mustard 'Red Giant'. West Sussex downland. 31st May 2005. The Romans pounded mustard seed with wine. The plant is known since prehistoric times. The romans named it 'Mustus' for the new wine they mixed with the seed, and 'ardens' for fiery. It was once believed to be an aphrodisiac. It is used in pickles as it is a strong preservative. The flowers and young leaves can be used in salads. The seeds were used as a poultice for rheumatism, chilblains, arthritis and inflammation.
