Two Central Pennsylvania Traction Co. cars col-lided in a dense fog at Harrisburg December car was Iwdly damaged and llie niotorman wasseverely but not fatally hurt. Combination Safctj Gate and StepGuard. We present herewith two illustrations of a com-bination safety gate and trap-door step guard whichhas been invented for use on electric cars to prevent passengersIrom alighting from the wrong side and also to protect them fromthe danger of being struck by passing cars. It was designed bythe mechanical department of the Pacific Electric Railway Co., withthe co-operation of Mr. Joseph McMillan, chief clerk to the generalmanager of the company. As will be noted by reference to the right-hand view, the gate ismade of two sections of .Vj-in. pipe, one end of each section being. |nl,l>lNi. ANll STICP (itlAKD. into a brass casting which is seemed to the dncir posli andacts as a hinge, the opposite ends being similarly secured to cast-ings which drop inln brackets upon the gate being lowered intoa closed position. The lower pipe section of the gate is con-nected with the trap door by means of a wrought iron strap, so thatwhen the gate is raised and folded back against the door post, thesame movement raises the trap door, and the whole is fastened backnut of the way by means of a latch attached to the door post. The contrivance is so simple that any one can operate it, and itcontains .so few parts an<l requires so little material that it is inex-pensive. Furthermore, the absence of bulkincss serves to renderit ornamental as well as useful. , „ 99f) STREET RAILWAY REVIEW. (Vol. XIII, No. 12. •Sccin* Things at Ni«ht.
