A garden spider on a web against a backdrop of red autumn berries on Viburnum opulus and late pink flowers of Abelia

Araneus diadematus is a very common spider throughout Europe and famous for its large wheel shaped web. The female spider in the image has a leg attached to a thread which acts as a warning system when prey flies into the web. The spider will feed before laying her eggs, guard them until she dies in late autumn or early winter and the eggs will hatch the following May. This spider is naturally found in a head down position and the image does not need to be rotated.
