He uses as a plate perforated sheetlead, which would seem to be easily moulded toirregular surfaces, but in fact it becomes wrinkledand so uneven that a very imperfect contact is pos-sible at best. The same plate has been used coveredwith chamois skin, but the protection is not sufficientfor any but mild currents. Massey prefers a flat coil of. — 157 — copper wire covered with a thick layer of absorbentcotton held in place by small rubber bands ; but thiselectrode can only be used comfortably with mild cur-rents, and must require constant renewal of the cottonto keep it fresh and clean, as it cannot be washed. Thesponge electrode has been very properly done awaywith, being unclean and expensive. For ordinaryexternal application with hand electrodes, Piffard hassuggested absorbent cotton covered with a layer ofgauze and retained in place by a spring band ofhard rubber around the rim of specially preparedhandles ; and he very properly suggests that it shouldbe prepared fresh and clean for every patient. Forthe same purpose, the author has used the combineddressing consisting of a thick layer of absorbentcotton with gauze on either side, which is more con-venient. A circular piece of the desired size is cutoff and applied to an electrode handle, being held inplace by a rubber band
