The basalt lava flows of the Ancud Volcanic Complex form high cliffs on the north side of Cocotue Bay, on the Mar Brava wild Pacific Coast of Chiloe Island, some 21 km west of Ancud. Small roads lead to deserted beaches and fishing villages. On the sandy soils of the bay centre, we see dairy cows grazing and wandering onto the sand beach. There are also vast tracts of native Gunnera or 'Chilean rhubarb'.
