Parasitic nematode worms, known as anisakis worms, in the stomach of a lesser spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula, that was caught on rod and line in the English Channel. If ingested alive they can cause a condition known as anisakiasis which causes unpleasant effects in humans. They are often found in the intestines, abdominal cavity and livers of sea fish and also in the flesh. Cooking the fish or freezing it first destroys them and renders them harmless.
