Here is how one wholesaler figured it out: In an ordinary year bulbs cost 5 cents, gave two to three flowers, ^aver- aging 10 cents, brought about 25 cents, loss of bulb twenty per cent, leaving the grower 15 cents for his work. This year bulbs cost 15 cents, produced three to four flowers, which averaged 15 cents (counting unsold lilies as lost), brought 55 cents, loss of bulbs fifteen per cent, leaving about 31 cents, or twice as much as usual out of which the grower could meet his extra labor costs, etc., and make a profit. If the left-over lilies can be sold the showing will be still better. That the retailers did not call for all (the pot lilies was shown by the fact that /the Boston store, which likes to •slaughter prices on lines not carried regularly, was able to pick up several thousand plants at 55 cents each, sell- ing them at 59 cents, much of it good stock.
