The 40m span Merchants' Footbridge, from Slate Wharf to Catalan Square, is a 3m wide deck suspended by 13 hangers from steel arches. It is part of the Castlefield Heritage Park, turning an industrial canal basin into a tourist attraction with several historic railway viaducts. In the right background rises the red bricks and cast iron bridge of the 1849 Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway Viaduct. This part of the Castlefield Canal Basin is known as the Castlefield Junction, where the 1765 Bridgewater Canal from the south-west (right background) joins the 1805 trans-Pennine Rochdale Canal from the north-west (behind the camera to the left).
