A striking feature in Dayak kampongs, especially inremote regions, is the presence of such upright pillars, carved more or less completely into human form andstanding before the houses. These are invariably forthe benefit of a dead person whom they guard, and if thedeceased was well provided with earthly goods two orthree are furnished. They are made of ironwood andoften higher than a man, but usually only the upper partis actually worked into shape, though many instancesare observed of smaller statues the entire surface of whichis crudely carved.
