When a young man Cleveland Abbe began to collectthe records of the family. Fifty-two years ago the author ofThe History of Windham wrote that Mr. Abbe had alreadyplaced under lasting obligation all of the descendants of theimmigrant, John Abbe, by his contributions of time and moneyto their genealogy. Cleveland Abbe was the pioneer in stormwarning away back in 1869. As a child I recall that his nick-name, Old Probabilities, was a household word. His laborsled to the establishment of the United States Weather Bureauin 1870. Next he began the display of cautionary storm signalsalong the coast and later the prediction of floods in rivers. In. 1879 he started the agitation for standard time, and in five yearshe gave to the United States and later to the world the standardhour meridians now in universal use. I will name only thesetwo achievements of this great scientist which have been ofincalculable practical use to all farmers, mariners, railway menand people generally. In the midst of scientific labors of thehighest importance Professor Abbe always found time for hisfavorite study of family history. He and his collaborator, , have located more than 15,000 Abbey descendants inthe United States and Canada, whose names will be found in theAbbe Genealogy now in press.
