Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903). 1890 illustration of Pope Leo XIII (born Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci). Leo XIII was head of the Catholic Church from 29th February 1878 until his death on 20th July 1903. He reigned until he was 93-years-old and is best known for his attempts to define the position of the Catholic Church with regard to modern thinking.
