Prison cell, former East German prison of Hohenschoenhausen, Berlin, Germany

The prison run by the East German Ministry for State Security was closed in 1990 following German unification. Critics of the East German regime and people caught trying to escape to the west were interrogated and imprisoned here. The complex was listed as a historical monument in 1992 and now serves as a memorial to explore the history of the prison from 1945 until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Some 120,000 people visit the site each year and most of the guided tours are conducted by former inmates.
