Naomi Ehrich Leonard, US engineer, holding a model autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Leonard is developing a mathematical system that mimics the behaviour of schooling fish. The system enables a group of AUVs to self-choreograph their movements in response to their environment. In 2006 she co- led a project involving 10 underwater gliders that patrolled the waters off the coast of California, collecting real-time data on water currents, pollution and marine biology. AUV gliders require little power and control their movement by inflating and deflating internal bladders. Leonard is Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University, USA. Photographed in 2006.
