The brakes are hand brakes, also of thestandard pattern ; the steps and running-board are madeto comply with the standard requirements. The trucks—not shown in the drawing—are of the pat-tern in use for all freight cars on this road, which wasdescribed and illustrated in the June number of the Jour-nal. They have 33-in. chilled wheels. These cars are 40 ft. long inside, and the doors have 5 opening, giving them a large capacity for furnitureand similar freight. They are rated at 40,000 lbs. capacity,but will carry more on occasion. A large number are inuse on the road, heavy orders for cars of this type havingrecently been filled by the St. Charles Car Company andother car works.
