Onthis ridge is constructed the road to Treves, descending fromthe upper part of the town by numerous windings. The construction of these works has during a period of500 years gradually progressed under various possessors, —Henry IV., Count of Luxembourg, afterwards German emperoras Henry VII. (d. 1312), his son John, the blind king of Bohemia(killed at the battle of Cressy in 1346), the Burgundians, theSpaniards, the French (whose eminent military engineer Vauban, under Louis XIV., reconstructed a great portion of the fortress),and finally the German Confederation.
