The presence of \.^ermianlimestone as the highest flanking stratum lends a special beautj^ to thesymmetry of the liiountain. This limestone, characteristically from30 to 40 feet in thickness and uniform on all sides of the Black Hills,underlain by 90 to 100 feet of soft red sandstone and clay, formshabitually a gentle dip slope ending in an abrupt escarpment, anddrainage radial from the hills cuts V-shaped gateways through it thatare among the most picturesque features of the region.
