Abell 383 galaxy cluster. Composite image showing the distribution of dark matter and galaxies in the Abell 383 galaxy cluster, which lies about billion light years from Earth. X-ray data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (purple) shows the hot gas that is by far the dominant type of normal matter in the cluster. Galaxies are shown with the optical data from the Hubble, the Very Large Telescope, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, coloured in blue and white. Imaged between September and November 2000.
