All had marched from four to seven hundred miles,encountering the extreme heat of midsummer, yet they borethe fatigue of their long tramp remarkably well. It is not to be wondered at that men who in boyhood hadbeen punished by their fathers for shooting their game any-where except in the head should soon become the terror oftheir foes, or that they should be spoken of in the British campas shirt-tail men, with their cursed twisted guns, the mostfatal widow-and-orphan makers in the world.
