The city was founded on the west bank of the Tigris River (far right) at some point between 762 and 767 BC by Caliph al-Mansur. The more expensive part of the city is in the western side (seen here) with low-income housing being located in the east. Image taken on 1 January 2000 by Space Imaging's Ikonos satellite.
