A statue in memory of Julia Dent Grant in front of the Grant home in Galena, Illinois. Julia Dent Grant was the First Lady of the United States during her husband's presidency. The house was constructed in 1860 was presented to Grant shortly after his triumphant return from the Civil War in 1865. Following Grant's election win as the 18th president of the United States in 1868 he only returned to Galena for occasional visits with his final trip to the house in 1880. In 1904 the Grant family gave the home and grounds to the city of Galena with the understanding it be kept as a memorial to the former general and president. In 1931 Galena gave the estates to the State of Illinois.
